The most common cause for dry scaling skin is chronic athlete's foot which may in turn have been caused by a fungal infection. The skin may have a dull reddish appearance. Another cause is psoriasis, which exhibits itself as small, white flaky patches. Don't attempt to peel off these patches since there will be pinpoint bleeding. There could also be blisters present. A solitary patch of dry scaling skin that itches may be neurodermatitis. This is often at the ankle. Treatment consists of using topical steroid compounds. more

Gangrene can develop in any person with poor circulation. Even scarier is that this situation can lead to the amputation of the toe, foot, or leg.
Here are the signs to watch out for when there's a sudden blockage to the legs: a sudden onset of pain in the feet or legs with a decrease in skin temperature, and color changes to the skin of the feet.
Gangrene have a tendency to occur in diabetics who may not experience pain because of a condition called diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy affects the nerves of the feet and legs causing a diminished ability to perceive pain, ... more

How to Treat Foot Blisters

I jog and I hike, I play tennis and baseball and I get these awful blisters frequently. I try to ignore these blisters and wait for them to disappear on their own. Some don't and get infected.
The proper treatment includes puncturing it and getting the liquid out. Apply antiseptic and cover with a bandaid. If this is done soon after the blister forms, many times it will heal primarily and the outer layer of skin will not slough.

Toenail Fungus

The title is unfortunately unappealing however I feel I need to talk about it because if left untreated, it can spread to the remaining toe nails and even to your fingernails. It's an infection and as such is contagious; it should be treated so as not to worsen your condition or spread to other family members.
My brother had this fungus and it started on his big toenail. He used Penlac, a kind of nail lacquer, applied nightly for several months. An oral antifungal medication can be taken if it's already progressed. He didn't want to lose his toenails so he made sure to stick to this ... more

Various causes include stress, emotion, or physical exercise or it's possible that no cause can be pinpointed. It can present as a mere nuisance. Unfortunately, severe sweating can lead to worse problems such as bacterial infections, athlete's foot, fungal infections, and foot odor.
The solution? Wear shoes that have vents, change socks often, applying foot powder. Drysol, a type of medication, can be used for the severe cases. I've also heard of botox being used to treat it.

Also known as heel spurs, heel bursitis, and plantar fasciitis, this condition is actually highly common. It starts off badly in the morning. I used to hoist myself up and sit for long periods at the office but as soon as I make the first step, the pain is so intense. A friend of mine, a physical therapist, explained to me that due to the pain, I tend to alter the way I walk, and this just leads to more pain in other areas of my body. He made me place a shoe insert that was gel-like, that helped much. It was supposedly for arch support. I had meds for the pain and I had to do a stretching ... more

I believe that too much exposure to loud noise can damage our hearing. Age doesn't matter too. Noise-induced hearing loss affects everyone whether young or old. Let me throw some statistics at you. Did you know that it is the second most self-reported, work-related illness or injury? 22 million American adults ages 20 to 69 have permanently damaged their hearing from exposure to loud sounds.
Avoid loud noises as much as possible but if you have to, protect your ears with ear plugs or earmuffs. more

I love going barefoot whenever I can...at home, at the beach, at the sports club. There's disagreement on whether it's actually good or bad for our feet. I read that some podiatrists see a lot of injuries related to going barefoot. Or could it be that these people just aren't choosy about the surfaces they walk on?
In my opinion, spending time barefoot is incredibly healthy for the feet. I'm also very particular with the kind of shoe that I wear. I'd encourage more barefoot activity though. In children, going barefoot develops agility and strength. Don't you think that it also applies ... more

Ingrown toenails are so bothersome. It's what you get when the nail penetrates into the soft tissue of the toe. It could become infected and when it does, the toe becomes red and swollen and may contain pus. For most of us, it's merely a discomfort but for diabetics or those with poor circulation, it can be quite severe. Gangrene could occur which is why doctors advise these high-risk patients to seek medical attention at the earliest sign of an ingrown toenail.
For prevention, it is recommended to wear properly fitting shoes and to trim the toenails straight across. It is also advisable ... more
