Childhood obesity , drug abuse, and smoking top the list of concerns for children’s health in the U.S., according to a recent national poll completed by the University of Michigan’s C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital (www.med.umich.edu). The poll, conducted each year by the hospital, showed these problems as the top three of ten children’s health concerns described as “big problems” by poll respondents. In 2007, the same concerns topped the list, but in a different order: Smoking was listed first, followed by drug abuse, then obesity.

You may have noticed reports on the news about the link between Alzheimer’s disease and some vaccinations, particularly the flu shot. Many people have grown wary of vaccinations, in general, because they fear the side effects that they can cause. Some new parents are now reluctant to vaccinate their children, because other studies have shown a higher incidence of autism and other disorders, in children who have received vaccinations. While the connection between vaccinations and certain diseases and syndromes is still under debate, it has given rise to a real fear of vaccinations.

Kids tend to use their holiday breaks as a reason to veg out in front of the television and eat snacks that are far from healthy. Parents fight with the fact that home activities and work often leave them without the ability to monitor their children's activities all of the time. If this is the case in your home, keeping your child active can mean just making a small change in everyday life.
A list hung up on the wall of all the times when children can watch TV, play video games and on the computer is a great way to keep a bit of control in the home. If this is not something you feel will ... more

The holidays are fast approaching and parents are wrapping those final gifts. This year it is important to take note of the health concerns regarding the holiday before the 25th of December is spent in the emergency room.
The most common injuries occurring in children are accidental injuries. These can relate to many different toys at Christmas, but one of the most common is the heated toys. Those fun baking ovens can get very hot and when little ones are left to bake on their own, injuries can arise.
Other forms of child injuries include falling from a riding toy and pulling down the ... more

Some children have food allergies to deal with on a regular basis. These food allergies can lead them into lives that are tainted with reading labels and worrying about the foods they are eating at social events and restaurants. Another trouble with food allergies, especially severe food allergies, is the ingredient list in the immunizations they are given to help save their lives.
Some immunizations are created with food byproducts and food products. These include eggs, which is a common food allergy in children. When a child is severely allergic to eggs they may not be able to complete ... more

What happens when those little toys from the local fast food restaurant no longer keep your child happy? This means they are growing up and fast and that means the parent will need to grow right alongside the child. When children grow up, they being to change both physically and mentally. They want to push their parents to see how far they can go and the physical limitations of life as a tween or teen. This can be nerve racking for the parent leading to fights and anxiety between mom, dad and child (children). There is help and hope out there and it may not be as hard to get as you may ... more

Are Swimming Pools Safe?

Kids naturally want to go swimming. As there are no lakes or beaches near where we live, we'd go to the public pool. I won't supervise my children alone. I'd bring either my husband or my sister. That way, there won't be a minute or second that no adult would be watching. Did you know that most kids who drowned had been out of sight for less than 5 minutes?
Aside from the fear of drowning, there's also the risk of getting diarrhea or skin disease from the pool. I tell my kids not to swallow pool water, and to practice good hygiene at all times. I check if the pool is regularly treating ... more

Not having a bowel movement daily makes my kids cranky..making the parent (me) even crankier. I get worried that body waste is building up and really, they'd feel out of sorts if they're not regular.
I've learned that in many cases, constipation can be prevented or corrected through dietary and behavioral changes. I make a note to talk to them about their habits, how often and how much effort it takes. For mild cases of constipation, I'd recommend high-fiber cereal, prune or apple juice, or over-the-counter softeners or laxatives made for children. If the problem persists, seek the ... more

What's your take on alternative treatments?

I'm a believer of only conventional treatments for my kids. If it's not proven to be safe by medical experts then I'm not allowing them to be used by my family. I'm not saying though that medicine is fool-proof. I turn a wary eye on most things and practice good judgment when it's necessary.
I'm sounding off on an article from the Boston Medical Center stating that 12% of children in the U.S. use alternative treatments. The primary reason is because they can't afford traditional care. Regardless of the cheap price, I'm not likely to patronize a type of treatment where no scientific ... more

Moms and dads always run around for months before school starts for their Kindergarten aged children trying to remember everything. How about that 5 year old check up? This well visit is about more than just weights and measures, it is about making sure your child is up to date on vaccinations in order to be a part of the school experience.
When visiting the doctor for the 5 year check up, make sure to bring along the local school guidelines. There are some places that require extra shots or vaccinations in order for your child to enroll in school. These shots will not be common and may not ... more
