What we commonly refer to as cold sores are in fact related to herpes and is medically defined as Herpes labialis; an infection of the mouth. This causes painful, irritating blisters on the skin around the mouth and other facial areas. It can bring on itching, redness and dryness as it runs its course.

Herpes labialis is a common virus and its believed the majority of Americans are infected.
